Kelly Caylor Elected AAAS Fellow

Kelly Caylor has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is one of 449 scientists in the 2025 class, announced on March 26, 2026, and was elected in the section on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences.

Three other UC Santa Barbara faculty were elected in the same class: Shelly Gable, David Morrison, and Javier Read de Alaniz. Across the University of California system, 50 researchers were named.

“I am proud to be part of an organization that has spent nearly two centuries both advancing scientific discovery and ensuring that science serves the public good,” Kelly told The Current.

Election as an AAAS Fellow is one of the oldest honors in American science, first awarded in 1874. The citation recognizes work that joins ecology and hydrology, including the lab’s long-running research on how water shapes drylands, which cover more than 40 percent of the Earth’s land surface.
